How The App Works

Food ID works through the use of an API called Chomp. The API gives us a lot of information on products and what’s in them through the product’s barcode. They have a robust database that is primarily built through user-generated content.

On top of Chomp, we have done quite a bit of research around ingredients. Specially, all the different names that packaged goods uses for common ingredients. The app currently searches for: Additives, Dairy, Dyes, Egg, Fish, Fruit, Herbs, Nuts, Shellfish, Soy, Sugar, Veggies, and Wheat.

Within those categories, the app searches a lot of technical terms or uncommon words for common ingredients. This information comes from a few different places including: consultations with a nutritionalist, various allergy-specific websites and extensive market research. Our database is constantly growing..

If in the process of using the app, you find something that you would like to be included in our ingredient list, please do not hesitate to reach out.
